Aura Frames require a constant 2.4GHz (also known as 802.11 b/g/n) WiFi connection in order to operate. This standard is supported by 99% of routers and our article answers the most common questions about this topic.
1) Why does Aura only use the 2.4GHz frequency band?
The 2.4GHz standard is supported by 99% of home networks. Although the 5GHz (802.11 ac) frequency band is faster, Aura Frames use the 2.4GHz band because of it:
- is supported by almost all residential routers
- consumes less power
- penetrates obstructions
- extends over a broader range
All of these benefits ensure that our frames operate more reliably in a variety of different environments and locations.
2) How do I know if my router supports 2.4GHz?
Most residential routers, including cellular "5G" (not 5GHz) Home WiFi routers support the 2.4GHz bandwidth but you can verify this in your router manual or on the manufacturer's website. More information can be found HERE. The manufacturer information will also indicate if your router is:
Single Band: supporting 2.4GHz (802.11 b/g/n) only
this will also have a separate 5GHz network that is incompatible with the frame
- Dual Band: supporting both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies simultaneously
|Note: A dual-band router may broadcast two separate networks (that you can see with your smart device) or it may only broadcast one network for both bands. The latter makes it difficult to force your frame to connect to the 2.4GHz band and you may need to log into your router to disable the 5GHz band.|
3) How do I know what frequency my network is on?
Often, in the WiFi settings of your smart device, the Network Name (SSID) may indicate what frequency the network is on. The name may include "2.4GHz, 2.4, 24G, 24" e.g.
If you use an Android or Google device, you may be able to see the frequency in your WiFi Settings (tap on the network) but this is not possible on iOS devices
To determine the frequency of SSIDs that have been renamed "Guest" or other, you will need to log in to your router's settings. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) will be able to advise how if you need help.
4) What can I do if my router is dual-band?
Dual-band is actually the most common router configuration and should not cause any problems with your Aura frame setup and connection.
If your router was configured to separate the bands, thus creating separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks with their own names (e.g. "My 2.4GHz network" and "My 5GHz network") and/or passwords, please ensure your device is connected to the 2.4GHz network before connecting your frame.
If you do not see the 2.4GHz bandwidth to connect to, you may need to simply reboot your router and try again.
5) What can I do if I have a mesh network?
Aura frames should not experience any specific issues with mesh networks.
However, on occasion frames may have trouble completing their connection step due to having access to multiple Access Points used to create the mesh network.
If this is the case, please try unplugging your additional access points temporarily, then attempt to connect the frame again. This may allow the frame to complete its connection without interference. Once connected, you can reconnect your Access Points without issue.
6) What can I do if I have 5G Home WiFi?
"5G" stands for 5th Generation Mobile Network and mustn't be mistaken for the 5GHz frequency standard. All current 5G Home WiFi routers support 2.4GHz WiFi networks. You can verify this by reading through your router's user manual, or by contacting your ISP. This includes AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon.
In some cases, you may need to enable the 2.4GHz bandwidth. Again, please read through your router's user manual or contact your ISP for further instructions. The router user manual can often be found online through your ISP's website.
